Case For Support: Television Studio
The Lock Haven University television studio, located within the Robinson Learning Center, is used by a vast array of students. A number of courses are taught there, including:
- Television Journalism
- Corporate Video Production
- Topics in Communication: Digital Video Editing
In addition, students work with the equipment for projects such as video résumés for their electronic portfolios. HavenScope is LHU’s student run TV club that also uses the facility on an ongoing basis to produce programs such as news broadcasts and game shows.
The television control room and studio needs a number of upgrades, including:
- A video switcher capable of broadcasting a HD signal
- A graphics engine to produce on air graphics such as lower thirds and station branding
- Video playback machines that handle HD signals and file based workflows
- A Teleprompter system to meet today’s standards and current technology
- Camera systems to meet today’s standards and beyond (4k resolution capable)
- Ergonomic furniture to accurately represent what students will see when they enter their career field
- A Green screen to create virtual sets using computer software
- Updated LED, energy efficient lighting
With these upgrades, the television studio at Lock Haven University would be brought up to industry standards. Working with such equipment would provide our students a competitive edge in a field that demands they stay current with technology. With the proposed enhancements to the television studio, students would also have opportunities to film and edit athletic contests and gain the necessary experience to land valuable internships at sites such as NBC News, WHTM-TV in Harrisburg, and the Discovery Channel.
Many LHU graduates have gone on to successful careers built upon a solid education provided by our accomplished faculty. With a renovated television studio, the opportunities for our students would be endless.
